Water, Sparkling
Hearts, Thrilled—
Changing Tokyo’s future.

Let’s join hands to restore and beautify the the Outer Moat.
By bringing the moats back to life, we rejeuvenate the city, people and nature.
Together, we can create a space that brings calm and refreshment into our daily lives.

Message

Our council has been working with the aim of beautifying the “Outer Moat” that once surrounded the perimeter of the old Edo Castle. The aim is to revive this cultural heritage site to harmonize history with nature.

Since the construction of Edo Castle over 380 years ago, the role of the outer moat has changed with the times, and the surrounding environment has also been greatly affected.

First, by improving the water quality, we hope to restore the moats to a state where a rich variety of plants and animals can again live, just like in the Edo period. We would also like to create a vibrant waterfront by implementing many of the historical sites around the outer moat areas, to increase its value as a cultural heritage site. By blending the Edo period with the modern era, we can pass this revitalized area on to future generations.

We will continue our efforts to revive the historic moat environment to make it “more beautiful than when we came” and preserve it for generations 100 or even 200 years from now.

Now that the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games have passed, we have put our minds to creating an urban oasis in Tokyo where beautiful and natural waterfront environments coexist with daily life—not only for international visitors, but also for people living in Japan.

As one element to enhance the Tokyo brand, we will continue activities toward the beautification of the outer moat. We sincerely ask for your support and cooperation.

About the Council

The Outer Moat Waterfront Regeneration Council is a volunteer organization established in May 2016 by a group of companies located in the outer moat area—which spans Chiyoda-ku, Shinjuku-ku and Minato-ku—for the purpose of water quality purification and landscape improvement. Our goal is to transform the area into a waterfront that provides healing and enrichment to people in their daily lives:

・A rich natural habitat, home to a variety of flora and fauna, and that reflects seasonal beauty.
・A cultural hub where visitors can experience the rich history surrounding the old Edo Castle.
・An urban space that achieves economic growth.

We propose the development of the area around the outer moat as a “place for relaxation” where these three elements coexist. Our hope is to leave a rich space for living to the next generation.

As a corporate citizen, the Council will focus on:

・Specific proposals for water purification and landscape improvement of the outer moat.
・Dissemination of information on activities related to the outer moat.
・Plans for organized events.

We will work together to revitalize the area surrounding the outer moat as one element of the Tokyo Brand.
